As clinical perfusionists we provide extracorporeal circulation support in patients undergoing a cardiothoracic surgical intervention. We also provide pre-, intra- and postoperative autotransfusion techniques reducing, possibly avoiding, use of donor blood when undergoing surgery. We provide these techniques not only in cardiac surgical procedures but for any major surgical intervention like for instance in orthopedic surgery. We are also involved in wound healing techniques based on preparation of platelet gels from the patient’s own blood.
ECCare offers services to hospitals, institution, companies and organizations who are involved in cardiac surgery and the treatment of high risk cardiology patients, blood saving strategies, blood management techniques and research.

Mr. Frosty, a novel method for patient cooling
Ever since the discovery that Mycobacterium Chimaera originating from water-based heater-cooler systems has been involved in life-threatening infections in cardiac surgery we have been trying to find a solution to this problem.
Several studies have shown these water-based heater-cooler systems are resident to this type of pathogen and current procedures to clean and disinfect these devices have proven to be unsuccessful. This has led in the Netherlands to a ban on placement of these devices in the operating room. This directive by the Dutch national health authorities has created a wide range of problems since the use of heater-cooler systems is essential to cardiac surgery.
A novel technology by Spectrum Medical, the Quantum Thermal Technologies ‘mr. Frosty’ is no longer water based but instead uses a combination of glycol as heat transfer agent and a special phase-changing material as a ‘cooling’-battery. Excluding water as a medium to regulate the patients temperature means this device can be used safely in the operating theatre.
For Isala Hospital Zwolle we have, in cooperation with Spectrum Medical and Medtronic, thoroughly tested this device as an alternative. Our experience has shown this system is sufficiently capable of replacing a water-based heater-cooler system and is now our system of choice.

New heart-lung machine technology for Isala
We have completed the replacement of the Terumo System 1 heart-lung machines for our partner Isala Hospital. The Terumo System 1 devices have proven to be very reliable over the nearly 14 years they have been in service. Unfortunately they are no longer available for purchase in The Netherlands.
Therefore we needed to explore what new technologies were available to support our patient in the next decade. After testing several systems we decided on the Medtronic / Spectrum Medical Quantum Perfusion Modules. This heart-lung machine system has proven to be extremely versatile and is loaded with new features. This machine has been designed from the ground up as the next-generation in extracorporeal technology and incorporates the Vision patient data management system to provide us as perfusionist with all the necessary tools to safely support our patients.

New Hospital Building Amphia

As of friday 29 november 2019 our partner, Amphia Hospital Breda, Netherlands moved into a beautifull new hospital building and we moved with them to the new OR’s to provide our perfusion services. This complicated logistic operation involved moving 291 patients from the old location to the new hospital.

Our colleague and partner Najib Ben Ayad is the winner of the "Diwan Award 2019 Medicine & Health category". Najib once started as a student laboratory technician. Here he came in contact with our profession of clinical perfusion for the first time. From that moment on, it was his goal to someday work as a Clinical Perfusionist. After his bachelor's degree, he was trained as a clinical perfusionist at the University Medical Center. Najib Ben Ayad has been working in public healthservice for 12 years now, 7 of which in perfusion and almost 3 years as a partner at ECCare.
Diwan Awards Holland is a recognition award for talented Dutch people with a bicultural background. Najib is the son of Moroccan parents who came to the Netherlands in 1970 as immigrant workers. Diwan means "light" in Arabic. With Diwan Awards Holland, a positive light is shed in the Netherlands on those young people with a bicultural background who are doing well and are full members of the Dutch society and are helping to improve it. They can be viewed as a role model for especially the next generation of young migrant (children) and all Dutch people in general.

The cardiothoracic operating rooms of the amphia hospital work with a "revolutionary", innovative, hybrid heart-lung machine. This so-called HECC system was developed by our team together with the Amphia hospital. Amphia thus remains a forerunner in the Netherlands and has devoted an article to the system in the periodical 'Vitamin A' which is issued by the hospital.
